Interview:

RYG: What’s different about the shopping experience at K Staton vs. chain plus stores?

JG: The difference about my “girls” shopping experience vs. chain plus stores is due to a couple of things. I think first is that one on one exclusive vibe you feel when you walk through our doors help!  We try and provide a level of service and attention to the customer  that make them feel that this is for them to be them, thighs and all, LOL!  I call them my girls because that is who they are! I am very protective of them, LOL! I want them to look and feel their best so I will never let them leave the boutique with something they are not 100% comfortable in. Secondly, and just as important we bring new labels to the customer as well. Such Monif C, Chinoo, and our newest label Jaime! We take great care in trying to find great labels that are not just trendy but also made with the “kurvy” woman in mind. Lastly, knowledge about the brands we carry is very important and something I feel my “girls” appreciate. We understand at the end of the day we’re women that crave style and most importantly variety and our size should not limit that!

RYG: Have you always been passionate about fashion?

JG: I want to say that I always wanted to look nice and always had the ability to put outfits together and see them styled but I can’t say that I read or paid as much attention to it as I do now. Clothing & Dressing well has always been a part of my life. My mom, aunts & grandmother were beautiful stylish women. I have these pictures of them dressed to the nines looking fabulous! So, it might be in my blood! But since I have had the boutique I have gotten into it more.kstaton2

RYG: What were some challenges you faced starting your own business?

JG: Becoming & staying an entrepreneur is very challenging! Some of the challenges I faced opening the boutique were the normal ones such as fear, doubting my ability to do it. It’s a lot of work involved behind the scenes that we don’t think about.  Like setting up accounts, tax ids, finding vendors, & funding. I had to stay focus and on top of it.

RYG: Have you considered opening additional stores?

JG: I have considered opening another store. That is my prayer and vision.  I have to be patient and plan correctly so that when I open it, it will stay open.

RYG: When selecting items for your shop; what do you look for in designs/designers?

JG: When buying for the boutique I try to find items that will flatters a woman with Kurves. I do believe that quality over quantity will take you a long way so I do look at how things are made and what there fabrics are. But my mission is to never comprise style for size. So I will never just put anything in here, it has to be contemporary with a hint of trend. I love classic pieces and separates that will allow you to mix and match in your wardrobe.

RYG: What tips or tricks of the trade can you give to our plus size fans?

JG: A tip that I can give is don’t be afraid to try new looks. Don’t pass it by just because it’s not what your use to. Second, fashion is fun, so have fun with your look. Lastly, don’t be afraid to look at the magazines, tv, & the people you come in contact with for outfit inspiration.  Trust me they got their idea from someone else too!
