Black is Beautiful…We knew that,RIGHT??

lupita-people-coverToday April 23, 2014 People Magazine revealed their 50 Most Beautiful People Issue  and on the cover; Lupita Nyong’o.

Lupita Nyong’o born March 1, 1983 in Mexico, New Mexico…she often referred to as the Mexican-Kenyan. Lupito has a Bachelor’s Degree in Film and Theatre from Hampshire College, a Master’s Degree in Acting from Yale School of Drama, and an Academy Award for Supporting Actress in Steve McQueen’s “12 Years off Slave.”

Question: Are we defined by others saying we’re beautiful or by knowing we are beautiful in more than the physical?

What make this moment so beautiful for me; all the little girls of color have a chance to see they too are beautiful. See, in March there was a segment on the TODAY SHOW where they asked little boys and girls of color to pick which doll (black or white) was beautiful and 85% chose the white doll. Then when asked which doll was the ugly and they chose the black one or the one of color. I was shocked!!!! What happened!!

The symbol of lupita is not only a physical statement of beauty but also a mental one. Women and little girls of color; boys too, should understand they too have strength, creativity, and grace. This People cover (to me) helped little girl learn how to choose themselves as beautiful –regardless of the color of their skin.

No one has to tell you, you are beautiful –you have to know you are to yourselves.

Congratulations Lupita from all the color girls…
