50 Shades of Blue

What is 50 Shades of Blue?

You are never going to be loved, no one will ever want you, you are used goods. If you don’t know how to please a man what good are you?  I spent most of my life believing that all I had to do was keep others happy in order to be happy myself……………..sound familiar?

These statements only scratch the surface of what it is like to be in a Domestic Violence situation.  I just knew that after going thru verbal, physical and mental abuse and surviving it, telling my story and sharing the hurt, the pain, the struggle and going thru the rebuild that this was something that needed to be shared with others.

50 shades1In 2015, I was looking at turning 50 and started reflecting on all I have been thru.  Seeing my father and my best friend go thru their battle and succumb to cancer, and hearing and seeing some of the horrific stories of struggle and triumph and watching others suffer and the distortion of lives, I felt that I could share my story of survival and the stories of my friend and my father and let others know that they are not alone and offer that opportunity to others as well.  50 Shades of Blue, affectionately named after my fave color, offers a platform for those who are not afraid to tell their story whether they are going thru it currently or have overcome it, and offer hope and support to others who may suffer in silence or don’t have the strength to tell their unique story.

Domestic Violence ,or Intimate partner Violence as it is now called, happens daily and I feel very strongly that it should be recognized year round and have just as loud a voice as Cancer. Often Domestic Violence, cancer, lupus, diabetes, Chron’s disease and/or abuse of any sort are often misconstrued in the media and in conversation.  Men and women suffer from Domestic violence but it is taboo to talk about and certainly unbelievable that a man would subject himself to such a situation. The sports world does its duty to brush it under the rug quickly though they will spotlight certain ones so as not to appear oblivious.  The LGBT community suffers in silence because society wishes to look the other way.  If you pay attention, Cancer gets its biggest spotlight because of Susan G. Komen Foundation, but what about those who have thyroid, stomach, colon, colorectal, brain, liver, bone or any other form of cancer, where is there marathon or NFL support?  When is the last time someone told you about lupus and its effects?  How much do you know about substance abuse that has not been drilled into your head by television or Hollywood glam?  These are the stories that need to be told.

Last year’s event had more of a party feel with vendors, music and more. This year we will do it different and have a sit down forum. The speakers, sponsors and numerous individuals who have and will support all have something to say and something that will make a difference.  I am proud to offer this platform and have all participants were a shade of blue to keep with the theme.  I hope to keep this going and watch it become bigger.
